Bro Hof will be the first course in Stockholm and the third in Sweden to use bentgrass on the fairways. Creeping bentgrass has been cultivated to provide a better feel for the ball, but also to cope with the climate better, be more resistant and thus be a more environmentally-friendly grass.
The grass is called Penn Trio, a mix of Penn Link (high shoot-density and disease resistance, good drought and heat resistance), Penn Cross (aggressive and hardwearing) and Penn Way, to best suit the soil type and climate. Penn allows a lower cutting height (6-7 mm compared to the Swedish norm of 10-15 mm) with a higher density, which means that the ball lies cleanly on the grass, allowing a better feel for the ball and strike. Penn grass types are more resistant, need less water and fertilizer and are therefore more environmentally-friendly. Their disadvantage is that they require more maintenance, e.g. vertical cutting and dressing once a month instead of once a season.
