Greens

All the greens are built from the bottom, almost half a metre below what will be the green’s surface, using a Sub Air System. Everything follows the USGA’s recommendations for green construction, and the guidelines are continually updated in order to accommodate the latest technology and new advice.
 


In order to achieve the best possible quality the greens are built according to the USGA’s recommendations.
 
  1. The incline of the green’s bottom layer must correspond to that which the surface will have. Its surface should be soft, tightly packed and free from hollows that could collect water.

  2. The drainage system is placed on top, in this case flat pipes. This is a modern construction, which no-one else has used in this

    longer playing season possible.
    particular configuration. Bro Hof has three mobile herring-bone type subterranean pipe systems connected to one surface drain per green. These can be used to introduce either oxygen or warm air to heat the greens, thereby making them "ready" earlier in the spring and extending the season in the autumn. At Augusta the pipes are used to cool the greens in the heat… But the pipes can also suck up water to dry out saturated greens.
  3. After that comes 10 cm of drainage gravel, which has been developed in a laboratory in Scotland in order to match the seed bed, ground, water, temperature conditions, etc. This special mix has a pH value of 6 to avoid killing the roots, which can happen if the pH value is too low.

  4. Finally there is 32 cm of USGA seed bed, in this case Penn A4 grass, which has proven to be of superior quality, easily established and dense, with good overwintering qualities and disease tolerance. 
  5. In order to keep the greens in perfect condition back-to-back-watering is used, with 10 sprinklers

    Greens follow the USGA’s recommendations for green construction to obtain highest quality
    on each green. Every other one goes inwards, and the others outwards. Naturally, all the functions are computer-controlled and the weather station can determine exact soil temperatures and water evaporation. The greens have moisture sensors and can recognise when it is time for them to be watered. Each green has its own life and needs, some have a roll off surface; others are edged by a thick rough.

  6. The greens are single cut so as to be as even and fast as possible.
