The roughs are watered like the fairways, so that they will grow luxuriant and beautiful. It should be as easy to find the ball as it is hard to strike it.
The ball should be easy to find but difficult
to strike in the lush, watered roughs.Bro Hof has mixed two sorts of ryegrass that are hardwearing and a beautiful dark green colour. However, one third of the seeds are Kentucky Blue, a type of grass that doesn’t grow anything like as fast as ryegrass. Due to this, the blades of grass in the rough are of different heights, which makes it more difficult to make contact with the ball… To make the roughs really luxuriant they are watered.
For ordinary members’ games the rough will be about 50-60 mm. For competitions it can increase to 90 mm. The idea is that the rough should be green and lush to look at, and the ball should be easy to find but difficult to strike.
