Bro Hof is built on ground that has been used for more than 1000 years. Not all interference in the environment is detrimental! Careful remodeling can actually develop the environment by highlighting and, to some extent, recreating the original meadow landscape and its historic relics.
The new owners want to develop the facilities in harmony with nature and culture. Bro Hof Castle has therefore been rescued from complete decay and the majority of the buildings that belong to the castle have been restored.
“Bro Hof Slott AB has invested in, and taken care of, some areas – to the delight of those interested in culture. This involves a general upgrade of the parks and grounds.” says MD of Bro Hof Slott.
The decline of the farm, Bro Gård, was already established and documented. The lack of maintenance had already resulted in the issue of whether to give the building protected status being written off.
According to an archaeological survey there are a number of relics that can be used, highlighted and emphasised in a way that illustrates the area’s long history.
A detailed archaeological survey showed that the majority of the area is without ancient relics, making it possible to exploit the area without historical barriers. “There are a large number of more or less diffuse relics from recent times that would benefit from being used, highlighted and emphasised in a way that illustrates the area’s long history.”
The abovementioned relics are burial fields from the early Iron Age and Viking times, Assur’s rune engraving from the 11th century, a Church from the early Middle Ages, buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries and a vast, open and cultivable meadow landscape from the 20th century which, in total, all contribute to surroundings that have an interesting cultural-environmental value. However, inadequate maintenance had meant that the embankments had crumbled and 20 percent of the cultivable area had been submerged under water.

“A neglected cultural-historical area has been restored and Bro Hof Slott AB is taking cultural-historical responsibility for saving what it is possible to save,” says Krister Widström and shows how buildings that can be utilised have been renovated.
